Saturday, May 17: Going up town

When I was a schoolboy, Going Up Town was a very special privilege; we were only officially allowed out of the school gates one lunch time per week up to the fifth form, when we could go out as much as we liked outside lesson time. So it was a pretty grown-up privilege.
It feels a bit like that today, going into Montpellier without Mrs K or Daisy, getting to spend as long as I like browsing the knives in the cookery section of Galleries Lafayette and the DVDs in Addon. And finding a cheap copy of Gosford Park and then Goldfinger - €20 the pair - makes it a good day. Then I finally get the steak-frites in l'Entrecote I missed out on last week, too. However, SNCF prove still incapable of selling me a ticket to Barcelona for Tech Ed this summer. The Spanish booking computer is refusing to talk to their machine, they claim, come back some other time. FNAC, however, do turn up the Joe Jackson tickets for next week and the one for Massive Attack who are appearing at the Arène in Nimes in the summer. So not a completely wasted trip, then.
