Motoring along

I've put a few pix of the Geneva Salon de l'Auto up at http://www.chateaukeyboard.com/geneva (NB: last two pix on page may not be work safe if painted female bodies are regarded as dangerous in your jurisdiction).
Impressions: This was the first time I've seen a Nissan 350Z close up and sat in one. Lovely looking car and the tan leather interior really lifts it. For the price, it's an absolute bargain. I liked it a LOT more than the Mazda RX8 which felt cheap in comparison. But, if you have to do four-up the Mazda would be the way to go. For two, the 350Z's the way I'd go and I'm seriously thinking about buying one - very seriously - when the house is sold. The ginger colour is great, too.
I really loved the look of the Ferrari 612 and the Maserati Quattroporte. Straight choice I'd take the 612 but if I had to chauffeur people around in a posh car, it'd be the Maserati.
Saw the Bentley Continental GT for the first time in the metal and like the new Rolls it's one ugly car. Much too ugly to spend all that money on it. Inside is lovely but I want a car that makes me glad to see it in the car park too, not just from behind the wheel. The new Rolls convertible concept was really fugly, and whoever chose that purple colour should be asking if I'd like fries with my burger about now.
The biggest crowds - this was the first public day and the first weekend day too - were around Ferrari and Maserati. It took me 15 minutes to struggle along the aisle between the two stands, in fact.
The Citroen Airtime or whatever they're calling it looks cool but it's really just an updated Renault Avantime. I do firmly think if you're chauffeuring posh people round who aren't French government ministers, they'd be disappointed to be sitting in a Renault or a Citroen - even if it's more comfortable than a twice-the-price Mercedes.
The show itself wasn't too badly organised, although the parking was completely fubarred. This year they did park-and-ride which is a good idea in principle, but they needed a LOT more signs pointing you in the right direction. And then when you left the car park you got stuck in the queue of those still coming in so had to do the circuit twice, which was completely mental. Took me 3 hours on Friday night to do the 50 kms from Geneva to Lausanne and then on to Montreux (to see the Kodo drummers) because of show traffic.
Everyone is doing 5 and 7-seater small people carriers like the Citroen Berlingo. Man, those cars are ugly. Have these people never heard of estate cars? Small city people carriers are also really in, and they're even uglier.
Nothing much new on the Porsche stand. The GT looks cool, as do the others, but - neh. Last year I'd have bought a Porsche in a heartbeat, now I'm not so sure. Ditto BMW - the 5 Touring is well done but the M5 Concept was, well, just there. Nothing stonkingly interesting about it, I'm sure it'll out-perform every other big performance saloon by the time it's actually released but it didn't have that car-park must-look-back-one-more-time attraction for me.
